The Department of Transportation and Public Works:

Provides a transportation network for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods;

Serves the building, property and accommodation needs of government departments and agencies;

Employs professional, dedicated people and offers a high level of customer service.

TPW's Transportation Network:

TPW maintains 4,100 bridges and nearly 23,000 kms of road through four district offices, located in Sydney, Truro, Bridgewater and Bedford;

TPW operates four cable ferries and three self-propelled ferries;

TPW plays a variety of roles in the development of a safe transportation system, supporting the economic prosperity of Nova Scotia;

TPW addresses the Province's position on Federal issues regarding air, rail and marine transportation.

TPW's Service Network:

TPW offers building, design and construction services to government. This includes building new construction and operating and maintaining existing properties. TPW is accountable for various industrial buildings, sites, and leased facilities;

As manager of a risk management and insurance program, TPW insures the provincial government's holdings, valued at approximately $320 million;

TPW is responsible for the management of major construction projects on the request of government departments and agencies.

TPW's Employee Network:

TPW has the largest number of employees of any provincial government department, employing approximately 2,000 people throughout Nova Scotia;

TPW's annual budget for 2004-05 is $241 million.
