Construction is a billion-dollar industry in Nova Scotia. The safety of you and your property is ensured, in part, by plans approval and reviews conducted during construction, and by municipal building officials who administer and enforce the building and plumbing code. Please contact your local municipal building inspector for more information.
The Building and Plumbing Code has been adopted into law by the Nova Scotia Building Code Act. The Act was amended in 2005 and became effective on July 1, 2006. The accompanying regulations went into effect on September 1, 2006.
Enforcement of the Code is carried out by municipal building officials. All construction exceeding $5000.00, and all structural changes, require permits which are issued by the municipalities.
