A big year for Canadian cinema at the 2006 Berlin International Film Festival – opening film, 14 selections and new Perspective Canada screenings

Montreal, February 1, 2006 - Telefilm Canada is proud to support the Canadian presence at the 56th Berlin International Film Festival, which is distinguishing itself this year with a total of 14 highly original films, as well as a number of industry initiatives designed to open doors for Canadian companies at both the coproduction and sales levels, most notably the new Perspective Canada screenings.

A testament to the quality of Canadian filmmaking, the Festival will open on February 9 with Marc Evans' drama Snow Cake.

Telefilm's support to the Canadian selection
Telefilm contributed to the German subtitling of the feature films in selection.

Through its International Festivals and Events Participation Assistance Program, all of the directors who are part of the selection will attend the Festival to assist in promoting their films and develop their international ties.

Once again, Telefilm is producing its Canada at Berlin brochure, an information and promotional tool distributed to the international press, and to international buyers and programmers. The brochure will also be available on Telefilm's Web site.

European Film Market: More than 40 Canadian companies at the Canada Stand
Located in the main building of the Market, the Martin Gropius Bau Museum, Telefilm is again overseeing the Canada Stand, comprised of the Canada Sales Desk and Producer's Lounge. Representatives from Telefilm will be on hand to organize networking events and answer inquiries about the Canadian film industry and coproduction treaties. Telefilm, which administers and coordinates the Stand, is partnering with the Department of Canadian Heritage's Trade Routes program, International Trade Canada, New Brunswick Film, and SaskFilm and Video Development Corporation on this initiative.

The Canada Stand gathers together over 40 companies from all regions of the country.

Telefilm introduces Perspective Canada
Telefilm is pleased to announce a new sales initiative to raise the visibility of Canadian cinema on the world stage: Perspective Canada, a showcase of recent Canadian films curated by top international festival directors and programmers. Screenings will be held in the auditorium of the new Canadian Embassy in Berlin.

Spotlight on Canada: A guide to coproducing and financing films in Canada, February 10, 2006
This event, organized by the Canadian Embassy, includes a keynote speech (The Berlinale from a Canadian perspective) by Telefilm's Executive Director, Wayne Clarkson, and four panels on producing with Canada. Among the panellists are high-level Canadian and international players, including Danny Chalifour, Telefilm's Director of International Operations and Development (Revival of the fittest OR how Germany and Canada can form new alliances to get the picture right).

Berlinale Talent Campus
The Talent Campus, taking place parallel to the Berlinale, is a platform of know-how and inspiration for the next generation of filmmakers. International and interdisciplinary in nature, the program will bring together over 500 young talents with seasoned professionals - among them 18 invited participants from Canada.

Berlinale Coproduction Market
This year's market will feature 44 projects from 24 countries, including three projects from the forthcoming CineMart in Rotterdam. Under an agreement between the two festivals, the Berlin market will include Stay by Canadian director Wiebke von Carolsfeld. In addition, the event will be providing a platform for 17 projects in the Talent Project Market from participants in this year's Berlinale Talent Campus, including Cassandra Nicolaou's Kristy Kazinski: Lesbian Nerd.
