Karen Matthias of the Consulate of Canada in Anchorage attended the official opening of the Pogo mine near Delta Junction, Alaska, on June 5, 2006. Pogo, which is owned by the Canadian company, Teck Cominco, and Sunitomo of Japan, will employ approximately 250 full-time workers and it represents an investment of more than $300 million. An economic impact study found in 2004 that Canadian companies provided 76% of the total mining exploration and development expenditures in Alaska. In 2004, Canadian mining companies directly employed approximately 900 Alaskans in year-round, well-paying jobs. |
