The Livestock Industry Branch enhances the development, diversification and productive capabilities of Manitoba’s livestock producers and processors by providing technical and specialized services along the agri-food continuum. The Branch provides specialist technical production and processing support to the department for beef, dairy, swine, sheep, goats, poultry, horses, bison, and non-traditional livestock. The Livestock Industry Branch supports regulatory activities including licensing and bonding of livestock dealers and agents to ensure beef producers in Manitoba are protected against default in payment, and a brand registry and transportation manifest to protect producers against the theft of animals.
Food Safety
The Food Safety Branch provides the Manitoba industry with a coordinated approach for food safety, animal health and animal welfare. The primary functions of the Food Safety Branch include: developing a strategic food safety plan in consultation and partnership with stakeholders and partners; delivering and developing on-farm and post-farm food safety programs and initiatives with a focus on prevention; providing communication and leadership in animal health and welfare and food safety issues with the general public; providing veterinary diagnostic laboratory services to Manitoba veterinarians their clients; and supporting the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer.
Crop Industry
The Crop Industry Branch provides producers, staff and agri-business with technical and specialized services and information to enhance diversification, productivity and profitability in agro-Manitoba. The services include agricultural land use planning, soil and water management and crop production information. The Crop Industry Branch also facilitates and supports innovation in the agri-food sector, and the development of value-added agri-food processing in Manitoba.
Innovation Services
The Innovation Services Branch develops and delivers the province’s programs regarding scientific innovation in agri-food and rural development and applied investigations related to value-added crop and livestock diversification. The Branch strives to achieve the province’s goals regarding renewable energy from agricultural sources. The Branch also establishes strategic partnerships among research providers including universities, colleges, Non-Government Organizations, federal agencies and the private sector.
Land Use Planning
The Land Use Planning Branch provides agricultural land use planning assistance to producers, local and provincial farm organizations, municipalities, planning districts, other government departments and agencies, as well as other groups. The Branch provides input and coordination from an agricultural perspective into the establishment of municipal and planning district development plans and zoning by-laws, and conducts departmental reviews of all department plans, zoning by-laws and amendments.
Agri-Environment
The Agri-Environment Branch enhances the development, diversification and productive capabilities of Manitoba’s livestock producers and processors by providing technical and specialized services addressing environmental issues. The Branch works with Manitoba Conservation, Manitoba Health, and related producer groups; updates the farm practices guidelines and legislation to assist producers in managing their operations in a sustainable manner; and to assist the Farm Practices Protection Board in determining normal farm practices. The Branch also coordinates and implements programs in support of agricultural sustainability.
