Raw Wieners Not A Good Idea - September 15, 2001 Manitoba Agriculture and Food's
Lynda Lowry has reminded consumers of the importance of cooking wieners.
"Since the Listeria outbreak in hot dogs in the U.S. three years ago, there has
been more information available about safely cooking wieners," said the foods and
nutrition specialist.
"Listeria is the name of a bacterium that is widely found in nature. While wieners
are thoroughly cooked before packaging, there is the potential for this micro-organism to
contaminate the product after processing. Unlike other bacteria, Listeria can grow on food
in the refrigerator, but it can be killed by normal cooking procedures. That's why we
recommend that hot dogs be completely cooked before they are eaten."
Many people can carry Listeria without harmful effects or illness. However, young
children, the elderly, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women are at
particular risk. They should avoid soft cheeses, unpasteurized milk, unwashed raw
vegetables, processed meats from deli counters and, of course, uncooked wieners.
"So don't give in to the pleas of your children to eat wieners right out of the
package," said Lowry. "Heat them thoroughly first."
