Transit of Mercury

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. It is an airless, rocky ball, looking quite a lot like the Moon. Spacecraft have flown past it, sending us back pictures of mountains and craters. However, there the resemblance ends. Mercury lies two and a half times closer to the Sun than our Earth, which means it intercepts more than six times the solar heat. The surface is hot enough to melt lead.
