Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP)

The Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP) provides long-term funding to community groups to develop or enhance programs for vulnerable pregnant women. Through a community development approach, the CPNP aims to reduce the incidence of unhealthy birth weights, improve the health of both infant and mother and encourage breastfeeding. CPNP enhances access to services and strengthens intersectional collaboration to support the needs of at-risk pregnant women, As a comprehensive program, the services provided include food supplementations, nutritional counseling, support, education, referral and counseling on health and lifestyle issues. Announced in 1994 by the Government of Canada, CPNP was one of the programs promised in Creating Opportunity. It is developed and delivered in partnership with the provinces and territories through joint management agreements and with First Nations and Inuit communities.
