To become officially recognized by the Government of Canada, an event must be brought to the attention of a member of Parliament, who then determines if the event should be brought before Parliament in the form of a private member's motion. Once the event has been approved in Parliament, it becomes officially recognized.

15 February: National Flag of Canada Day

Canada's red and white maple leaf flag was first raised on 15 February 1965. National Flag of Canada Day is celebrated each year in commemoration of that event.
