CGC announces changes to western crops for 2006-07

The CGC announces changes for the 2006-07 western crop year, effective August 1, 2006. These changes include heightened enforcement of the requirement that all grain dealers and elevators be licensed or exempted by the CGC as of August 1, 2006, and revisions to exemption criteria. Grain dealers and elevators that are unlicensed after August 1, 2006, may be subject to fines, closure, or both.

The Canada Grain Act provides for the appointment by the Commission of an Eastern Standards Committee and a Western Standards Committee. It specifies the numbers and qualifications of members. The Committees recommend specifications for grades of grain, select and recommend standard samples to the Commission, and perform any other related duties the Commission may assign. Their recommendations are forwarded to the Commission for consideration.

Report on the Quality of Canadian soybeans 2005

The 2005 harvest survey shows the Ontario top two grades of soybeans are well above their ten-year average for oil content but below their ten-year average for protein content. When compared to 2003, the most recent year for an Ontario survey, the 2005 average oil content of 22.6% is 2.6% higher while the average protein content of 40.6% is 2.1% lower.

Report on the Quality of western Canadian solin 2005

The 2005 Canadian Grain Commission harvest survey of western Canadian solin shows an increase in oil content along with decreases in protein and linoleic acid contents. The 2005 oil content, 49.1%, is 1.1% higher while the protein content, 22.0%, is 1.4% lower than in 2004. The linoleic acid content of the oil, 73.3%, is lower than the record high of 75.2% in 2004.
