Q: Does PWGSC own all Government of Canada properties?

A: PWGSC is just one of several major Government of Canada property custodians or "owners". Other departments/agencies with extensive real estate holding include National Defence, Transport Canada, and the National Capital Commission. PWGSC is primarily responsible for the Government of Canada office space inventory, both Crown-owned and leased. The department's role is to ensure that public servants are provided safe, healthy and productive work environments.

In certain instances, where no federally-owned property is available, PWGSC leases space from private companies on behalf of other government departments.

Q: On A Treasure to Explore, what is used to create Parliament Hill's Web camera image?

A: We are currently using a Canon ES600 Video Camera attached to a PC with Windows 95 using a hardware product called Snappy, available at most camera stores. This is linked to another software product called SnapCap, that captures the image and connects it to the production Internet server and then broadcasts it over the Internet.

Official Languages

Q: Why does the French language button appear first followed by the English on the PWGSC Internet welcome page?

A: All materials posted on the federal government's Internet sites are subject to requirements of the Official Languages Act. The primary obligation is to serve the public in both official languages. Specifically, the layout of a page depends on the geographical location of a department. The headquarters of Public Works and Government Services Canada is located in Gatineau, Quebec. Therefore, in our case, French takes precedence. Where an office is located anywhere outside of Quebec, English will be the primary language.

If the document is not for sale, it usually means it is available, free of charge, from the "host" government department.

Q: Where can I find historical information about the Government of Canada and its employees, buildings, political figures, etc. nonspecific to PWGSC?

A: Please refer to on-line encyclopedias or check your local library to find historical Government of Canada information. PWGSC is not responsible for researching, writing or storing this kind of information.

Security

Q: How do I obtain security clearance to do work for the Government of Canada?

A: The Canadian and International Industrial Security Division of PWGSC may initiate a Designated Organization Screening (DOS) or a Facility Security Clearance (FSC) for potential suppliers, for contract opportunities which contain security requirements. A written request from the responsible Procurement Officer or Project Manager will be required.

Once an organization/consultant is "sponsored" to participate in the Industrial Security Program, the department will provide the personnel security screening forms required to conduct the necessary verifications.

If there is a contract solicitation with security requirements that you are interested in bidding on, contact the responsible procurement officer to inquire if they would sponsor your organization for the required level of security clearance.
