Registration of Canadians Abroad (Poster)

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada offers a registration service for Canadians travelling or residing abroad. This service is provided in the event there is a need to contact Canadians to offer urgent advice during a natural disaster or civil unrest, or to inform them of a family emergency at home.

Canadians are encouraged to register if:

  • they are going to be abroad for three months or more
  • they will be spending any time in a country, or a specific area within a country, that is covered by an official Travel Warning
  • they will be visiting a country for less than three months that has security concerns and/or does not have a resident Canadian government office
  • they will be travelling to a hurricane-prone region during the hurricane season (June 1st to November 30th).

See the Travel Reports for country-specific recommendations.

If you are making a short-term visit abroad and your trip does not meet the criteria above for registration, you are strongly advised to:

  • leave a detailed travel itinerary and contact details with family or friends in Canada
  • provide family with the emergency number for Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada
  • keep on hand the phone numbers for the Canadian government offices in the countries they plan to visit.

Registration is voluntary, and personal information provided on the registration form is used in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act. Under the Privacy Act, personal information may be disclosed in certain circumstances. A few examples include where disclosure would clearly benefit the client, where the public interest clearly outweighs any invasion of privacy, or pursuant to a court order. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, through its government offices abroad, will
attempt to contact registered persons once a year to ensure the accuracy of its records.

PLEASE NOTE

If you register prior to your arrival in a foreign country, you must contact the Canadian government office to which you sent your form to confirm your arrival and request the activation of your registration.

Please be advised that unless otherwise notified by yourself or a member of your family, the Canadian government office will consider your registration as formally departed on the date selected as the anticipated departure date on your original registration.
