What is a GCC Project?

Girl and grandmother knittingA Generations CanConnect project is a collection of stories about older Canadians, written by students and published on the GCC Website. Students interview older Canadians on themes related to their life experiences, write content, prepare images or other media, and publish these stories online using basic or advanced templates. Upon completion, a student can invite the people who were interviewed to get together to showcase the final results during a celebration event (optional).

There are two types of GCC projects — GCC Level 1 and GCC Level 2. Each level corresponds to a different level of multimedia use. It is best to choose a level that corresponds to the skill set of the students involved. If you have never participated in GCC, we recommend that you try a GCC Level 1 project first.

GCC Level 1

A GCC Level 1 project consists of an Introductory homepage, a minimum of 15 stories, and a final report. Each story is at least 150 words in length and is based on an in-person interview with an older Canadian. With the use of multimedia technology, the student can publish the stories and photos on the Web using the GCC online template-based Website. Under the supervision of an adult Team Leader, students will create a historical, cultural and educational resource on the Internet. (please view the rubric to see a revised and more complete description)

GCC Level 2

A GCC Level 2 project consists of advanced online templates designed to provide students with a more technically challenging project. The creative use of photographs and illustrations, sound, video and font selection accentuates the stories. A GCC Level 2 project requires at least 5 stories of 3-5 pages each, where each story is at least 300 words in length. Each story is a narrative based on an in-person interview with an older Canadian and built around a specific theme; and each story contains at least 1 multi-media object in addition to the text (i.e. a photograph, an illustration, a sound file, a video file, etc.). Students are encouraged to use references and research to support their stories.
(please view the rubric to see a revised and more complete description)

For a more detailed description of how to use the templates, go to Publish Stories — Access Templates. For information on creating a multilingual GCC project using languages other than English and French, please visit our Multilingual Project Reference Page.

Please note, if you wish to submit stories written in other languages, a translated version in French or English is required as well, and only one version will receive funding.

Any number of Team Members can participate in producing the required number of stories for a project.

Each completed and posted project will receive $300 in funding.

The key elements in the GCC project cycle are:

  • Team Leader (teacher) submits a proposal form.
  • GrassRoots Program Partner approves the proposal form.
  • Team Leader assigns usernames and passwords (provided on the submitted proposal form) to the Team Members (students).
  • Team Members produce materials (text, graphics, etc.) for the templates.
  • Team Leader submits the project for final approval.
  • Team Leader submits a final report.
  • GrassRoots Program Partner approves the project and final report and posts the project.
  • GrassRoots Program Partner sends funding to the School.
  • Team Leader and Members can host a Celebration event for all participants (optional).
