The economy and regional innovation system

Major corporations, including multinationals, a supplier network of SMEs and a strong research and development sector, both publicly and privately funded, work together with readily available risk capital to make up Quebec's highly developed regional innovation system. The result is that in the core strengths of the economy, aerospace, agri-food, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and information technology, Quebec is known the world over for its accomplishments.

A good example is biotechnology. NRC's Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) is a substantial catalyst, along with the major universities, international companies and the government of Quebec. Through consortiums and collaborative agreements, technologies are developed and transferred to private companies. As a result, Ernst and Young placed Quebec first in Canada and tenth in North America in revenues generated in biotechnology.

Other sectors have been successful in a similar way. The aerospace sector, composed of major companies (Marconi Canada, Bombardier Aéronautique, Pratt & Whitney Canada, etc.) along with more than 240 SMEs together produce sales of 7.8 billion dollars, an increase of 66% in five years. Agri-food employes 50,000 people and generates 12 billion dollars each year, a product of cooperation in building capacity in both internal and export markets. The pharmaceutical industy's innovative companies invest heavily in research and development (47% of overall Canadian investment). A large number of world leaders in information technology are based in Quebec, including telecommunications, software development and multimedia. Among them is Softimage, whose software made Jurassic Park such an international success.
