CANMET Mineral Technology Branch

Who We Are

The CANMET Mineral Technology Branch (MTB) is the science and technology arm of the Minerals and Metals Sector of Natural Resources Canada. We conduct research and development throughout the entire minerals and metals cycle from mining and mineral processing, downstream processing and fabrication, and recycling. We are a client-driven organization that strives to ensure sustainable development in the minerals and metals industrial sectors, including: economic productivity, health, safety and security, protection of the environment, and sound technical input to codes and regulations.

How We Are Organized

CANMET Mineral Technology Branch comprises two laboratories:

  • CANMET Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories (MMSL): CANMET-MMSL provides quality research and sound scientific advice to the mining and minerals industries and to provincial/territorial and federal departments involved in promoting or regulating these industries. CANMET-MMSL conducts research and development on a wide range of processes and technologies involved in extracting ore from the ground and transforming it into a concentrate, mineral product or metal.

  • CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory (MTL): CANMET-MTL develops and deploys technologies to improve all aspects of producing and using value-added products from metals and other materials. CANMET-MTL is also involved in the integrity of metal structures from gas pipelines to offshore drilling platforms.Go to top of page
