November 20, 2006 -- Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, released the following statement in response to the arrests of 12 subjects allegedly linked to a cross-border cigarette smuggling and drug trafficking ring. Arrests were made in Ontario and Quebec, as well as the Akwesasne Territory:
“Thanks once again to the combined efforts of our law enforcement community, activities linked to the trafficking of contraband cigarettes and illicit drugs have been curtailed,” said Minister Day. “Close co-operation between our federal, provincial, and municipal officers is key to tackling crime.”
On November 20, members of the Cornwall Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU), Royal Canadian Mounted Police, with the assistance of their police partners, arrested 12 subjects who will be charged with a total of 115 counts of indictment for various offences, including drug trafficking and cigarette smuggling. An underground cigarette manufacturing plant located in the State of New York on Akwesasne Territory was also dismantled. Approximately 30 officers took part in this operation conducted as part of Project Crawler.
“Our officers' hard work and tireless dedication continues to help ensure the safety and security of Canadian communities,” added Minister Day. “Canada's new government is committed to tackling crime and these latest arrests demonstrate that this commitment is being met.”
