The images, text, audio and video clips, documentation, illustrations, designs, icons, software and all other content on the Culture.ca gateway were produced and/or compiled by the Department of Canadian Heritage or by third parties for the purposes of the Culture.ca gateway and are protected by Canadian and international copyright laws. The content on the gateway or links to material created and provided by third parties may be covered by other restrictions as well, including copyright and other proprietary rights held by third parties. The Government of Canada retains all rights, including copyright, in data, images, text and any other information contained in and on the Culture.ca gateway and expressly forbids the copying or use of any protected content, except for purposes of fair dealing, as defined by Canadian copyright law, and as described below.

Privacy Policy/Personal Information

The Department of Canadian Heritage is committed to providing visitors with a Web site that respects their privacy. The following summarizes the privacy policy and practices on the Culture.ca gateway.

  • Canadian Heritage does not automatically gather any personal information from you, such as your name, phone number, or e-mail address. This information is only obtained if you supply it voluntarily, usually through e-mailing us during your visit to the gateway.
  • Any personal information you do provide is protected under the federal Privacy Act. This means that, at the point of collection, you will be informed that your personal information is being collected, the purpose for which it is being collected, and that you have a right of access to the information. Disclosure of personal information by Canadian Heritage can only be made in accordance with the Privacy Act and the Access to Information Act.
  • Canadian Heritage uses software that receives and records the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer that has contacted the Culture.ca gateway. There is no attempt to link these addresses with the identity of the individuals visiting the site.
  • It may be necessary to make changes to this policy from time to time. You will be advised of these changes thirty days in advance.

Cookies

  • The Culture.ca gateway occasionally uses "cookies" to track how visitors use the site and to determine the proportion of repeat visitors. The cookies we use do not allow us to identify individuals. They are compiled into statistical information on traffic patterns and are used to assess site efficiency. If the Culture.ca gateway is using cookies that collect personal information, a notice will appear on the site advising of such use. You will be provided with an opportunity to refuse them. Such refusal will not affect the site performance or restrict your ability to access information from this site. (A "cookie" is a file that may be placed on your hard drive without your knowledge by a Web site to allow it to monitor your use of the site.)
  • Visitor information is not disclosed to anyone except Government of Canada personnel who need the information to carry out responsibilities of their job. Any further disclosure of the personal information you give us will be in accordance with the federal Privacy Act.

Email Communication

Culture.ca is using GotMarketing services for the management of its mass email campaigns, such as the Culture.ca eNewsletter. GotMarketing has implemented privacy, anti-Spam and security policies.

Trademarks

Many of the trademarks, service marks, and logos displayed on the gateway, including the logo of the Department of Canadian Heritage, are registered and/or unregistered marks of the Government of Canada. The trademarks of third parties may also be displayed on the Culture.ca gateway. Nothing contained on the Culture.ca gateway should be construed as granting any license or right to use any trademarks on the Culture.ca gateway without the express written permission of the Department of Canadian Heritage or any third party that may own the trademarks displayed. Any unauthorized use of the trademarks is strictly prohibited.

Public Communication

'Public communication' means a discussion group, chat area or e-mail function offered as part of this Web site. You shall not upload to, distribute through, communicate or otherwise publish in a public communication hosted on the Culture.ca gateway any content which is libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, threatening, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, abusive, illegal or otherwise objectionable that would constitute or encourage a criminal offence, violate the rights of any party, or that would otherwise give rise to liability or violate any law.

The views expressed in content appearing on Culture.ca (i.e. At a Glance’s, Showcases, Featured Sites, Viewpoints and others) are entirely those of the originators, and should not be attributed in any manner to Culture.ca, e-Services Branch, the Department of Canadian Heritage or Library and Archives Canada.

Culture.ca Subject Tree

The presentation layer of Culture.ca’s Subject Tree augments Dewey Decimal Classification of Web resources. Each node of the Culture.ca subject tree is mapped to multiple nodes of the Dewey Decimal Classification, enhancing interoperability with our current and future content partners.

Culture.ca Classification

Dewey Decimal Classification of Web resources is augmented by the presentation layer classification system, Culture.ca Classification, © 2003, Department of Canadian Heritage. The Culture.ca Classification system is a three tier, numerical classification system created specifically for Web presentation of cultural Web resources. You can view the classification system on the Culture.ca Subject Tree page. Each node of the Culture.ca Classification system is mapped to multiple nodes of the Dewey Decimal Classification, enhancing interoperability with our current and future content partners. The Culture.ca Classification system is available for use free of charge – for more information please contact us at info@culture.ca.

Language Policy

The Culture.ca gateway is produced as an initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage, in collaboration with public and private sector organizations. Content created on the site is produced in both English and French. Searches can also be conducted in both official languages; however, content originating from a non-governmental Web site, following a link from Culture.ca, is available only in the language in which it was provided if the supplier of this information is not subject to the Official Languages Act.

Culture.ca is committed to making available content that reflects Canada's linguistic duality, and will continue to work with the Canadian cultural community to strengthen the balance between French and English digitized content.

Links to the Site

The Department of Canadian Heritage encourages other Web sites to link to the splash page and/or home page of the Culture.ca gateway, by means of a text link or an image link. Content from the gateway may not be used within a frame. Users that wish to create specific links to web pages within the gateway must request permission in advance by contacting the Department of Canadian Heritage via email at info@culture.ca and provide details on the proposed usage. Upon reviewing the link, it will be determined whether to approve the proposed link and if so, detailed and specific guidelines for the use and citation of the content to which the link will be created will be provided.
