A Developing World Map

A Developing World is a map showing the latest health, wealth, and education indicators for the countries of the world. It illustrates the countries in three categories corresponding to their level of human development based on the United Nations Human Development Index. It also provides information on the Millennium Development Goals. This easy-to-use tool was designed with teachers and their students in mind.

An online version of the map includes interactive features, links to stories of Canadians working in international development, and a series of 26 bilingual lesson plans to help teachers make use of the map in the classroom.

The lesson plans have been designed to be incorporated into provincial and territorial programs for teachers who want to help their students understand the concepts of international development, social and global responsibility, as well as to stimulate their critical-thinking capacities. Topics such as international development and poverty, the spread of HIV/AIDS, and the environment are explored.

The lesson plans are aimed at students in Grades 6–12 (or Grade 6 to Secondary V in Quebec) and include special activities and documents to be used by students and teachers. They were developed by teachers for teachers with the help of the Canadian Council for Geographic Education.

This interactive map was created as part of an innovative partnership between Canadian Geographic and the Canadian International Development Agency.
