Navigation
Navigating or browsing the CHRT Web site is quite simple. Use the top navigation bar by clicking on any of the blue or black buttons to go to the page it represents. You can also click on any of the titles in the left menu bar and go directly to the information that you have chosen. If you click on the black button entitled "Canada Site," located in the top navigation bar, you will leave the Tribunal site and go to the home page of the Government of Canada site. Click on the "Back to Home" located in the left menu bar to return to the home page of the CHRT.

Format of Content
Most of the content and documents on this Web site are available in HTML format. Some documents are also available in their original format of PDF (Portable Document Format). You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view these documents.

For a quick view of what can be found on our Web site, take a look at the site map. It provides a hierarchical list of the main topics that appear under each of the buttons in the top navigation bar and left-hand menus.

Search
The search function allows you to perform basic searches of the entire CHRT Web site or more specialized searches of databases containing Tribunal cases, interim rulings and final decisions.

Simply type one or more keywords into the "box" on the search page, and then hit the "Search" button. Our server will then look for any "matches" with your query within the CHRT database and show you a list of results. Your search can be further refined or narrowed by selecting specific dates or grounds of discrimination.

By default, this search engine looks for the exact phrase you typed in.
Typing multiple words will only find results that match all of the words in that exact sequence, except in some cases common words like a, and, the, etc.

Use AND or OR between multiple words, unless you are looking for an exact phrase. In a case or decision search, for example, you can enter the name of a complainant or respondent, the operator AND and a subsequent keyword, (e.g., Smith AND surveillance).

Helpful Hints:

• The CHRT Search Engine is not case or accent sensitive.
• Attaching an asterisk (*) to the right-hand side of a word will return pages with words beginning with the letters that precede the asterisk. This search will not recognize partial word matches unless you use an asterisk at the end of the partial word (for example, searching for compla* will return complainant, complaints, complaint, etc.).
• Punctuation marks such as the period (.), colon (:), semicolon (;), and comma (,) are ignored during a search.
• To use specially-treated characters ( (&), (|), (^), (#), (@), ($), ((), ()) ) in a query, enclose your query in quotes (").
