Sub-series Consists of:
16 lower level description(s)

Sub-series Part of:
Mary (Hallen) Gilmour

Date(s):
1833-1874

Extent
    0.08 m of textual records.

Scope and content
Sub-series consists of the diaries of Mary (Hallen) Gilmour. Of Mary's childhood diaries, only three sets of covers survive. The covers are filled with numerous cartoons, doodles, and ditties which include images and text by Mary herself, as well as those from popular sources such as nursery rhymes.

There is a consistent run of Mary's adult diaries dating from 1843 to approximately 1858, and a final volume dated 1874. They mainly describe the day-to-day events of a single woman living amidst a close-knit family network in rural Ontario (the subject of her brief marriage to Dr. Gilmour is not mentioned). Family events, health, and details of the household are frequently noted. Entries also include descriptions of numerous social visits and outings with friends and family members, including boat trips and sightseeing trips to view an Aboriginal village. There are also sporadic references to her artistic activities.
