The Department

Nova Scotia Environment and Labour is responsible for delivering effective and efficient regulatory management for the protection of our environment and the health and safety of Nova Scotians. We have a staff of more than 400 employees working from offices throughout Nova Scotia.

Almost 70 per cent of the department's resources support inspections and monitoring activities. Among the items we are responsible for are air quality, drinking water, workplace safety, fire safety and many other facets of everyday life. You can browse through a list of topics on our home page or view a list of divisions of the department.

The department has responsibility for several agencies, boards, and commissions including the Labour Relations Board, the Nova Scotia Securities Commission and the Workers' Compensation Board. A full list of our responsibilities is available on our Agencies, Board, and Commissions page.
