Old Vic Theatre performs four Canadian plays

The Canadian High Commission in London (Cultural Section) teamed up with Canada's National Arts Centre (NAC) and London's Old Vic Theatre last month to stage readings of four critically-acclaimed Canadian plays.

The plays, chosen by way of a selection process among dramaturgs from leading UK theatres, were Scorched (Incendies) by Quebec playwright Wajdi Mouawad, translated by Linda Gaboriau; The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God by the multi-award-winning Djanet Sears; award-winning Unity (1918) by Kevin Kerr; and the recent Rune Arlidge by Michael Healey.

With the participation of four distinguished British directors as well as many high-profile actors, the works were staged at the historic Old Vic over four days, from March 15 to 18, for 350 members of the British theatre industry, with a view to having full production of the plays at UK venues.

The event is expected to raise the profile of Canadian theatre in the United Kingdom, exposing British audiences to Canada's diverse and innovative playwriting.
