Canada Aviation Museum Inaugurates its new Storage Wing on April 14, 2005

Ottawa—The new 8,200 sq m structure, designed primarily as an aircraft storage facility to protect the Museum’s internationally renown collection is located on the Canada Aviation Museum’s historical Rockcliffe site in Ottawa. This new Wing, was officially inaugurated on Thursday April 14, in the presence of local dignitaries, Museum officials and members of the Canadian aviation community past and present. The ceremony including a flypast of vintage and serving aircraft marked the completion of the latest phase of the Canada Aviation Museum’s long term development plan.

The new Wing will provide shelter for several aircraft too large for the Museum’s main public facility that have been stationed outside for many years. The Wing will also accommodate many aircraft and artifacts from the Main Museum building thereby creating new spaces and opportunities for public displays, exhibitions and programs.

Primarily functioning as protective and appropriate housing for many of Canada’s aviation icons, the public will be provided access on a limited basis. A complex plan of aircraft movement and placement in the new Wing will take place over the spring and summer months of 2005.

The Government of Canada announced the $20 million funding for the new Wing in May 2001. The structure was designed by Arcop Group, and members of the professional team that undertook this project were Jacques Whitford and Associates, Bouthillette, Parizeau and Associates, Halsall Associates Limited and Groupe Pomerleau. The new Wing is constructed primarily of steel and provides a dramatic addition to the Rockcliffe Parkway with its wing shaped design and glass curtain wall.

The next phases in the Museum’s overall development plan will include a large conservation and restoration hangar to accommodate some of the Museum world’s largest artifacts and a complete reconfiguration of the public displays offered in the existing Museum building.

The Canada Aviation Museum, is Canada’s best aviation museum with an internationally renowned aeronautical collection. The Museum is located at the intersection of the Aviation and Rockcliffe Parkways.
