Government of Canada Supports Promotion Intégration Société Nouvelle

MONTREAL, April 15 2005 -- Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament (Outremont) Jean-C. Lapierre, on behalf of Minister of State (Multiculturalism) Raymond Chan, today announced $65,000 in funding for Promotion intégration société nouvelle (PROMIS). The funds will enable this organization to hold training workshops intended to help residents of Montreal's multi-ethnic Côte-des-Neiges district better integrate into Canadian society.

"This project is good news for the Côte-des-Neiges district. It will help residents acquire the tools they need to participate fully in the development of our society," said Minister Lapierre. "I am delighted to support this project, and I congratulate the organizers and volunteers who have made it possible."

"The Government of Canada recently reiterated its commitment to encouraging the full participation of new Canadians in our society, and offering them various learning opportunities," said Minister of State Chan. "The PROMIS project fits perfectly with our priorities by developing the capacity of members of ethnocultural communities to integrate into the workforce and local civic life."

PROMIS has worked with the multi-ethnic communities of Côte-des-Neiges for 18 years. To provide more information and guidance for new arrivals, the organization seeks to organize 30 workshops with the specific objective of facilitating the integration of immigrants into the labour market. PROMIS also plans to produce a guide to help members of cultural communities get involved in different social causes as volunteers.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. The Canadian Multiculturalism Policy promotes full participation in Canadian society for people of all origins, and encourages interaction between individuals and communities of different backgrounds. In addition, the Policy encourages federal institutions to respect and promote Canada's multicultural character.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
