Government of Canada Supports the Ontario Science Centre

TORONTO, April 21, 2005 -- Minister of State (Infrastructure and Communities) and Member of Parliament (Don Valley West) John Godfrey, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $1,000,000 in funding for the Ontario Science Centre's project Agents of Change'. The funds will enable the Centre to renovate its existing facilities, to build a new concourse, and to purchase specialized equipment.

"It is important to give this institution the means to continue to showcase science and technology, not only in the Toronto region, but also across the country," said Minister of State Godfrey. "Thanks to this funding, the Centre will be able to fully play its role of promoting and popularizing the sciences."

"Science and technology play an important role in the development of our country," said Minister Frulla. "The Ontario Science Centre improves awareness among all ages of the importance of this sector in our lives, and I am pleased that our government is able to help the Centre fulfill its mission."

Built in 1967, the Ontario Science Centre aims to improve visitors' knowledge of science and technology by providing them with thought-provoking experiences. The Agents for Change' project will enable the Centre to renovate two existing structures and to construct a new concourse to improve accessibility.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing arts, visual arts, media arts, and also improves physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
