HUBBARD ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR DREDGING AT POINTE-SAPIN IN NEW BRUNSWICK

April 15,  2005

MIRAMICHI -- Charles Hubbard, Member of Parliament for Miramichi, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will fund a dredging project at Pointe-Sapin harbour in New Brunswick.

"Harbours are vital to the economic well-being of our fishing communities," said Mr. Hubbard. "This federal investment will ensure that fishers in the Pointe-Sapin area have the safe, efficient facilities they need."

Pointe-Sapin will be the site of a major dredging project to ensure this very busy harbour remains fully operational and accessible by fishers. Work on the project will start very shortly with dredging of the entrance channel followed by dredging of the west basin in late summer. Finally, the sand trap will be dredged during the winter months, using land-based equipment, with completion expected by the end of March 2006. Work will be coordinated with the Administration portuaire de Pointe-Sapin, a local non-profit group that has operated the facility for the benefit of the fishing community since 1996.

The project will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the Administration portuaire de Pointe-Sapin, which manages and operates the facilities for local users. Such close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
