Statement by the Prime Minister on the death of Prince Rainier

April 6, 2005

Prime Minister Paul Martin issued this statement today following the death of Prince Rainier III of Monaco:

"It is with sadness and regret that I learned of the death of Prince Rainier earlier today. As one of Europe’s longest reigning monarchs, Prince Rainier had great vision for the Principality of Monaco. In 1962, he was responsible for bringing about a new constitution for Monaco, in which he shared power with a National Council of elected members. He also worked with great determination to make Monaco a symbol of economic growth and diversity. And thanks to the importance the Prince attributed to culture, Monaco enjoys a cultural wealth that is the envy of many.

"Prince Rainier leaves a rich legacy: a thriving country with political stability, economic dynamism and social awareness. The world at large has also benefited from Monaco’s sharing of its success through social and humanitarian action.

"The heartfelt sympathy of Canadians goes out to the Prince’s family and to the citizens of Monaco."
