Grain Quality - Bacterial Benchmarking

Baseline established for the numbers and types of bacteria associated with Canadian grain exports established , and for the effect of storage conditions on their survival and propagation. (Work to be done by CGC to pursue joint CGC/AAFC Strategic Outcomes) Baseline of the numbers and types of bacteria associated with Canadian grain exports was established using the heterotrophic plate count method and rapid microbial identification of select Canadian grain vessel shipments.   As well, the effect of storage conditions on bacterial survival and propagation has been established .

Grain Quality - Fusarium and Fusariotoxin Benchmarking

Grain Quality - Ochratoxin Baseline

The current lack of data regarding the occurrence, levels and geographical distribution of ochratoxin addressed. (Work to be done by CGC to pursue joint CGC/AAFC Strategic Outcomes)

Addressed the previous lack of data regarding the occurrence, levels and geographical distribution of ochratoxin by testing for the presence of ochratoxin A  in carlot shipments of Western Canadian wheat.

Round-up Ready Wheat/Adventitious Presence: Review of Detection Methods, Tolerance/Traceability Requirements and Visit of GMO Laboratories

Available methods for detection of GMO's better understood, in order to select the method best suited to Canada's grain handling system for validation and future use. (Work to be done by CGC to pursue joint CGC/AAFC Strategic Outcomes)

Better understanding of all available methods for detection of GMO's has been developed through a review and compilation of literature on the topic and through visits and material received from European laboratories.
