Canada's New Government Provides Support for Internet Users to Discover Acadian Forest

OTTAWA, July 25, 2006 - The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, today announced government funding for the Centre international pour le développement de l'inforoute en français (CIDIF), which will be used for the "Touch Wood" project.

"The Internet is an extraordinary tool that enables us to discover different facets of our history," said Minister Oda. "The Government of Canada is proud to support the "Touch Wood" project, which will raise awareness of the social-cultural heritage of the Madawaska Valley in both official languages."

This support will allow the CIDIF to make a series of images and artefacts relating to the Acadian forest available to Internet users. The Centre will also make this material available for educational use.

The CIDIF's mission is to provide specialized tools and services that will encourage the use of software and Internet applications by users from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Financial assistance of $253,404 for this project is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canadian Culture Online Partnership Fund.
