FIRST EVER AIR TRANSPORT
AGREEMENT BETWEEN CANADA AND ALGERIA
OTTAWA — The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport,
Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of
International Trade, today announced the conclusion of Canada’s first air
transport agreement with the Government of Algeria for scheduled air services
between the two countries. "The government is pleased that an agreement has been reached and air services
are likely soon to be introduced," said Minister Cannon. "Direct air services
will benefit passengers, shippers, airlines and airports.""This new air agreement is symbolic of the important commercial development
taking place between our countries," said Minister Emerson. "The expanded air
service will facilitate two-way business travel between Canada and its leading
economic partner in the region."
In addition to operating their own aircraft, carriers can provide code-sharing
services. Code-sharing is a type of air service where an airline uses the
flights of other airlines for transportation for a portion of a passenger’s
trip. The agreement includes strong aviation safety and security provisions.
Air Algerie has announced that it plans to operate up to two flights per week
between Algiers and Montreal. Air Canada intends to offer code-sharing services
to Algeria via Europe, in cooperation with its partner airlines.
