Writer's First Program / Programme d'aide à l'écriture de scénarios
Telefilm Canada Approves 19 Projects for Fiscal 2006-07

Montréal, July 27, 2006 - Telefilm Canada's Quebec office has announced a commitment to fund 19 promising screenwriting projects at the treatment or first draft stage. Funded through the Writer's First Program/Programme d'aide à l'écriture de scenarios (PAS), 16 of them are in French and three in English. Several of the selected projects are by well-known names that include Mario Bolduc (Le Dernier tunnel), Micheline Lanctôt (Les Guerriers) and Sébastien Rose (La Vie avec mon père).

Launched in 2000 as part of the Canada Feature Film Fund, Writer's First/PAS is intended to develop and retain a pool of creative, talented and experienced screenwriters, and to produce a bank of Canadian feature film scripts with strong box-office potential. The program encourages creative renewal and professional development while seeking to ensure that Canada's cultural, linguistic and regional diversity is reflected in the resulting films.

To preserve the confidentiality of the decision-making process, only the writers' names are made public at stage 1 (Outline to Treatment), since projects supported at this stage may apply for further funding at stage 2 (Treatment to First Draft).
