FREDERICTON, New Brunswick, September 29, 2005 — The Honourable Andy Scott, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced $1.09 million in funding to support 27 fellowships and Canada Graduate scholarships in New Brunswick. This funding is provided through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
"This investment is allowing more than 2,000 Canadian students to carry out research at universities across Canada and around the world," said Minister Emerson. "These students will become our next generation of leaders, applying the knowledge and insight they gain through research to sharpening Canada's competitive edge in all sectors of society."
A total of five fellowships and Canada Graduate scholarships have been awarded to the Université de Moncton, and an additional 22 have been awarded to University of New Brunswick.
Sarah Stephens of the University of New Brunswick received a scholarship to complete a master's degree with a particularly personal interest. Once a teenage mother herself, Stephens will examine and develop programs to increase young parents' self-esteem and improve the health and well-being of both baby and mom.
"SSHRC fellowships and scholarships help give Canadian universities and professors the best possible resources to develop the next generation of researchers who will be essential to keeping Canada at the forefront of innovation and discovery," said Minister Scott. "I take this opportunity to congratulate some of New Brunswick's most talented students and wish them every success."
Minister Scott made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for SSHRC, who today announced a total investment of $96 million in 55 universities across the country to support the appointment of over 2,300 fellowships and scholarships.
SSHRC is an independent federal government agency that funds university-based research and graduate training through national peer-review competitions. SSHRC also partners with public and private sector organizations to focus research and aid the development of better policies and practices in key areas of Canada's social, cultural and economic life.
