CFB GAGETOWN, New Brunswick — Have you ever wondered where the Army files its authorized and approved lesson plans?
For present and future instructors, a computer system called Documentum will ease the stress of creating new lesson plans every time a course begins or a new piece of equipment is introduced.
Documentum is a fully integrated content management system that allows soldiers to store large amounts of information within one management system. The information can take the form of text, images, graphics or sound files.
The Documentum Enterprise Document Management System (EDMS) is a software system that relates to training more than ever before. It will enable soldiers to consult and share information easily. The Docbase will be populated with the most up-to-date, authorized and approved courseware including:
- Qualification standards;
- Training plans;
- Lesson plans;
- PowerPoint presentations;
- Other related training material.
The new computer system stores each file separately in its Docbase server and considers all files as objects. The objects can be shared, used and reused by soldiers posted across Canada at any computer workstation that is connected to the Defence Wide Area Network (DWAN).
"The system is very easy to use," said Shelia Degaust, the System Administrator. "It is accessible from any computer connected to the DWAN. Users do not need an account to access or download from the site. However, if you wish to edit or populate the system, an account is required."
Users of the system should expect download times to vary depending on the file size of an object. For example, the download time for qualification standards is quicker because of its small size, whereas training plans are larger files that take more time to download.
"There are units out there that are a little unsure of it. I think it is very effective if you use it," stated Captain Jim Given, Field Standards Officer, Artillery School.
Documentum will play a key role within the centres of excellence as they adapt to the Army of the future; allowing soldiers quick access to up-to-date doctrine.
