National Flag of Canada Day

OTTAWA, February 15, 2006 – Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women Beverley J. Oda joined with Canadians to celebrate the 41 st anniversary of the red-and-white maple-leaf flag on this National Flag of Canada Day.

“On National Flag of Canada Day, we commemorate not only our flag, but also what it stands for: our country and our citizenship,” said M inister Oda . “The maple-leaf flag reminds us of key moments in our history and all that we have accomplished as a society.”

“A true symbol of our country's unity, the Canadian flag bears witness to our past, our present, and our future. Celebrating the flag's anniversary provides us with an opportunity to express our pride in being Canadian and to cheer on the Olympic athletes representing us in Turin, Italy,” added M inister Oda.

To highlight the day and make young people more aware of the importance of our flag, a poster has been distributed to all elementary and high schools throughout the country.
