Illegal fishing in inland waters results in penalties

Plum Point… Jordan Applin of Shoal Cove was convicted for jigging salmon, fishing in a closed area, possession of untagged salmon and retaining over-sized salmon. He was fined $1,000 and placed on probation for three years and, during that time, prohibited from possessing or consuming Atlantic salmon and being within 200 meters of a salmon river. Mr. Applin must also attend any assessment, treatment or counselling recommended and write a 200-word letter of apology to the Salmon Preservation Association for the Waters of Newfoundland (SPAWN).

Mr. Applin was apprehended with four other individuals on June 23 and July 4, 2005 at St. Genevieve River by Fishery Guardians of the St. Anthony Detachment, Fisheries Management Branch.

Rocky Harbour

Justin Collett of Portland Creek was fined $600, which is to be paid over nine months, following a conviction for a fishery offence in Provincial Court at Rocky Harbour.

Mr. Collett was convicted of fishing salmon during a closed time. In addition to the fine, equipment (rod, reel and line) valued at $400 was forfeited to the Crown. Upon payment of the fine, the court ordered the equipment to be returned to Mr. Collett’s grandfather, the owner.

The court placed Mr. Collett on probation for one year during which time he is prohibited from holding a fishing or hunting license until all fines are paid, or being within 100 meters of a scheduled salmon river except when crossing over a bridge on a road. Mr. Collett was apprehended in July at the Otter Area on the Portland Creek river system by fishery guardians from the Rocky Harbour detachment.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada would like to remind the public that buying or possessing illegally caught salmon is a crime and punishable in a court of law. We appreciate your support in the conservation of the salmon resource.
