Two guilty of fishing cod out of season
Rocky Harbour… Charges of fishing Atlantic cod during a closed time have resulted in fines and forfeitures for Edward Brake and Craig Brake, both of Woody Point.
The two men were convicted in provincial court at Woody Point on November 28, 2005, and each fined $1,600 and placed on three year’s probation. The judge also restricted the men to commercial vessels when venturing on coastal waters, and ordered them not to possess fishing or hunting licences until the fines are paid.
Further to the fines, a 16 foot wooden boat, motor and a seized catch of cod and mackerel were forfeited to the Crown.
The men were apprehended by two fishery guardians from the Rocky Harbour Detachment.
St. Anthony
Enos Patey, of Quirpon, was found guilty on November 21, 2005, in St. Anthony Provincial Court of using a shotgun and a prohibited type of ammunition known as “bird shot” while harvesting seals. He was also found guilty of failing to produce a licence.
Mr. Patey was fined $800 on the ammunition charge and $200 for not producing a licence. Mr. Patey was also placed on probation for three years with the condition not to apply, or possess, hunting or fishing licences until at least 50 per cent of the fines were paid.
Sixty-four seals valued at $2,665, a shotgun and ammunition were forfeited to the Crown.
Fishery officers from the St. Anthony Detachment conducted the investigation with assistance from fishery officers from the Bay Roberts Detachment and the RCMP in St. Anthony.
