QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA , November 23, 2005 – The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Irwin Cotler, today announced the following appointment:

Marc David, of Montréal is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec. He replaces Mr. Justice P.P. Carrière who has elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice David received a Bachelor of Civil and Common Laws from McGill University and a Masters in business administration from Concordia University. He was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1987.

At the time of his appointment, he was a partner with the firm Shadley Battista and practised primarily in the areas of penal and criminal law.

Mr. Justice David is president of the Canadian Bar Association's National Criminal Law Section since 2004. He is a member of the Association des Avocats de la Défense de Montréal and the Association Québecoise des Avocats et Avocates de la Défense. He is a frequent lecturer, has taught at University of McGill Faculty of Law for many years and has taught criminal law at the Québec Bar admission course.

This appointment is effective immediately.
