Kitimat Liquified Natural Gas Project:
Federal Funding Awarded to Participate in the Environmental Assessment
OTTAWA, November 3, 2005 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has provided $40,000 to three applicants to support their participation in the environmental assessment of the proposed Kitimat Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) project. The funding is made available through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency. The recipients are: Kitimat Valley Naturalists, Kitamaat Village Council, and Kitimat Chamber of Commerce.
A funding review committee, independent from the comprehensive study environmental assessment process, was appointed to examine all participant funding applications. All of the Committee's recommendations were unanimous and are contained in the report of the Funding Review Committee, which is available on the Agency's Web site.
The proponent, Kitimat LNG Inc., proposes to construct and operate an LNG facility at Emsley Cove, approximately 18 kilometres south of Kitimat, British Columbia. The facility would include marine off-loading, LNG storage, natural gas liquids recovery, regasification and send-out facilities. Gas would be delivered into the existing Pacific Northern Gas Ltd. pipeline in Kitimat.
