Government of Canada Supports the Salon du livre de l'Outaouais

GATINEAU, March 7, 2005 -- Member of Parliament (Hull-Aylmer) Marcel Proulx, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $37,000 in funding for the 26th edition of the Salon du livre de l'Outaouais, which will take place from March 16 to 20, 2005, in Gatineau.

"I want to congratulate the Salon organizers on the work they have been doing for more than a quarter of a century," said Mr. Proulx. "Each year, the Salon attracts more than 30,000 visitors who come to this event to explore the books and the creativity of writers from both this region and from across Canada."

"Our Government is committed to ensuring that Canadians have access to books written by Canadians," said Minister Frulla. "I am delighted to support this book festival, which is a wonderful expression of our commitment. I want to congratulate the Salon organizers and volunteers for their determination to offer readers from the region an unparalleled place for meetings and discoveries."

The funds will enable the Salon du livre de l'Outaouais to promote Canadian writers and books. Some 350 writers will participate in the event. The Salon du livre de l'Outaouais is the third most important book fair in French-speaking Canada.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Aid to Industry and Associations component of its Book Publishing Industry Development Program. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, the program seeks to strengthen the capacity of the Canadian-owned and -controlled sector of the industry to publish and market Canadian books in both domestic and international markets.

Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
