Prime Minister announces appointment of Chair of the National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy

NEWS RELEASE

March 18, 2005
Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced the appointment of Glen Murray as Chair of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE).

"As a former mayor of Winnipeg, Glen Murray is one of the pioneers of the green municipal infrastructure initiative,” said the Prime Minister.  "The national leadership he demonstrated as Chair of the Big City Mayors Caucus and through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities also positions Mr. Murray very well to lead NRTEE in providing advice and expertise to the Government of Canada as it works to fulfill its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol.”

With the recent coming into force of the Kyoto Protocol and building on climate change action already underway, the Government of Canada has requested the NRTEE’s advice and recommendations in the development of a long-term energy and climate change strategy for Canada.

The Round Table brings together distinguished Canadians from all sectors of society dedicated to the promotion of sustainable development in Canada.  It is an independent advisory body that provides decision makers, opinion leaders and the Canadian public with advice and recommendations on promoting sustainable development.

Glen Murray, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is Research Associate for the Centre for Urban and Community Studies, Visiting Scholar & Urban Policy Coordinator at the University of Toronto and a business partner in the consulting firm The Glen Murray Group. He is a former Mayor of Winnipeg, best known for his vision to build culturally dynamic urban centres, and was the first Chair of the Big City Mayors Caucus.
