Donation information for fallen members and advisory to the public about related scams

March 11, 2005

Additional Fund Information
Donations can be made to either two separate funds: The Fallen RCMP Family Fund (set up for the families of the four slain members) or the “K” Division Slain Peace Officers Fund (set up to assist the division with the costs of sending its members to the funeral of any Canadian police officer killed in the line of duty).

People wishing to donate to the families of the fallen members should indicate clearly on their cheque, or with a note attached to any cash, that this is for the FALLEN RCMP FAMILY FUND.
People wanting to donate to the “K” Division Slain Peace Officer’s Fund should also clearly indicate their desire for any funds to be placed here.

The RCMP wishes to thank the public for their outpouring of sympathy and support as we continue to join with the families in mourning our fallen members. We now have information about where to direct donations. This is the only approved and legitimate information.

Scam Alert

It is also with great regret that the RCMP would like to alert the public to a charity scam claiming to be in the interest of fallen officers in Alberta.

“It is disturbing that at this time of national mourning there are individuals taking advantage of the situation for personal gain,” said Chief Superintendent Wayne Watson, Director of the RCMP’s Commercial Crime Branch in Ottawa.
“As with any charity scam, we urge the public to ask questions and be vigilant.”

These solicitations have occurred by phone and Internet-based solicitations can be expected. As is the case with all charity scams, the public is urged to exercise due caution.

Those who feel they may have been victimized by a scam charity are advised to contact their local police and the PhoneBusters National Call Centre at
1-888-495-8501.

We continue to thank Canadians for their prayers, thoughts and good wishes at what continues to be a difficult time for us all.
