CN freight derailment near Brighton, Ont. to affect VIA's passenger service on Toronto-Ottawa and Toronto-Montreal routes today

MONTREAL (08:30) - VIA Rail Canada has announced that all of its passenger trains operating today between Toronto and Ottawa and between Toronto and Montreal are currently expected to depart their orinating stations on schedule, but that passengers will be bused between Cobourg and Belleville, in both directions, due to the closure of the Canadian National main line early this morning following a freight train derailment in the Brighton, Ont. area. Some en route delays are expected, and some trains may have to be replaced by motorcoach service over a longer section of their route. VIA does not anticipate cancelling any departures at this time however. VIA sincerely regrets any inconvenience this disruption may cause its passengers and will revert to its normal service as soon as the rail line is reopened. Further updates will be issued as required. For further information or to reserve a ticket, customers may call VIA toll-free at 1-888-VIA-RAIL. VIA also offers passengers full booking capability at www.viarail.ca or at its self-ticketing kiosks at major stations throughout the Quebec City-Windsor corridor.
