MINISTER STRAHL PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR CANADA'S DAIRY GENETICS EXPORTS
OTTAWA, Ontario, November 7, 2006 - David Sweet, Member of Parliament for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, today announced $2.3 million in funding to the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association (CLGA) in support of its international strategy.
This funding, provided under the Canadian Agriculture and Food International (CAFI) Program, will assist the CLGA to position Canada as a world leader in value-added exports of dairy genetic materials. The CLGA plan includes market access and advocacy activities designed to create opportunities for Canadian producers, while making it easier for international clients to thrive using Canadian genetics under their own market conditions.
"Canada's New Government is committed to ensuring CLGA members can thrive, maximize returns and represent Canada's dairy genetics products to the world," said Mr. Sweet. "Stimulating growth for Canada's dairy genetics in the global marketplace creates opportunities for producers here at home."
The diverse expertise within the Canadian industry will help the CLGA work towards enhancing penetration in key markets as well as capturing new opportunities and raising the profile of Canada's products.
"Our plan addresses animal health trade related issues in international markets, trade advocacy to increase market access, as well as promotion of Canadian reproductive and management programs abroad," said CLGA President Steve Jones. "We're grateful for the new government's commitment to our industry, which will allow us to further strengthen Canada's reputation as a source for genetic products of the highest quality."
Other activities include participating in global access and advocacy meetings, key agricultural shows, as well as providing technical experts for international conferences and training projects on a variety of dairy management, artificial insemination, and genetic evaluation techniques.
