Grey Cup Arrival at the Forks

WINNIPEG—Media are invited to attend the opening festivities ceremony for the 2006 Grey Cup arrival at the Forks at noon on November 14.  Weather permitting, two Canadian Forces CH-146 Griffon Helicopters will transport the Grey Cup, its handlers and the V.I.P. escort to their destination.

Passengers on the first CH-146 Griffon will include:  Manitoba Premier Gary Doer, Mayor Sam Katz, CFL Commissioner Tom Wright, Winnipeg Grey Cup Chairman Gene Dunn, and Winnipeg Grey Cup Chairman David Asper.  The second Griffon helicopter will transport the Grey Cup with its handlers.

The Grey Cup will then be escorted to the stage by a military piper and a RCMP/Military Colour Guard.  Speeches from the stage will include remarks from the premier, the mayor, the Grey Cup festival co-chairs and the CFL commissioner.

The second helicopter will shut down and be open to the public for approximately one hour before departing back to 17 Wing Winnipeg.

Event details are as follows:

WHERE:  The landing zone for the CH-146 Helicopters will be behind the Inn at the Forks on an elevated green space about 100 metres in front of and to the left of Scotia Bank stage.  The landing zone will be fenced off and media will have a designated photo opportunity location.

Media will also have a selected location directly in front of and to the right of the Scotia Bank stage.

WHEN:

  • Helicopter arrival - 11:58 a.m.
  • Speeches - 12:15 to12:28 p.m.
  • Media scrum (Green Room behind the stage) - 12:30 to12:45 p.m., and
  • Winnipeg Police Service band performance - 12:30 to 12:45 p.m.

Reporters and camera crew are requested to be in location by 11:45 a.m.
