NEW BRUNSWICK JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA , August 30, 2005 – Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

Thomas E. Cyr, Q.C., of Edmunston is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of New Brunswick Family Law Division. He will replace Justice J.A. Sirois, who has elected supernumerary status.

Mr. Justice Cyr received a Bachelor of Laws from University of Ottawa in 1981, and was admitted to the New Bruswick Bar in 1982. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2000.

At the time of his appointment, he was a partner with the firm Cyr & Pilote where he practised primarily in the areas of family law, civil litigation and criminal law. He has acted as a criminal prosecutor on behalf of the Attorney General of Canada.

In the past, Mr. Justice Cyr has been a member of many Bar of New Brunswick committees including acting as president of the complaints committee. He is a past member of the Association des juristes d'expression française du Nouveau-Brunswick and is frequent lecturer.

This appointment is effective immediately.
