REGAN ANNOUNCES FEDERAL FUNDING FOR HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS AT QUEEN CHARLOTTE CITY

Queen Charlotte City, B.C. – Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced that the Government of Canada will initiate a two-year project to reconstruct and upgrade the breakwaters that protect the federal harbour at Queen Charlotte City in British Columbia.

“This initiative will ensure the safety of users and the continued viability of the Queen Charlotte City harbour well into the future,” said Minister Regan.

The project will replace and upgrade the aging log bundle breakwaters with floating concrete breakwater units. Construction of the floating units is scheduled to begin in the fall, with installation at the harbour in May 2006. This will constitute completion of the initial phase of the project.

This project will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the Queen Charlotte City Harbour Authority that manages and operates this facility for the benefit of local users. It is this close cooperation which enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishing and recreational users.
