MINISTER SCOTT APPOINTS NEW CHAIR FOR NUNAVUT WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT BOARD

IQALUIT, NUNAVUT (August 30, 2005) - Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Member of Parliament for Nunavut, on behalf of the Honourable Andy Scott, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the appointment of Joe Tigullaraq to the position of Chair for the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board.

“Mr. Tigullaraq has extensive experience in the field of wildlife management which makes him an ideal chair of this important board,” said Minister Scott. “He is strongly committed to the protection of Nunavut’s environment and the wise use of its resources for the benefit of Inuit and other residents of the territory.”

“Mr. Tigullaraq has the experience, leadership and management skills to excel as chair of the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board and continue the important work the Board has begun,” said Ms. Karetak-Lindell. “His knowledge of Nunavut communities, background in wildlife management and respect for Inuit Qaujimanituqangit (Inuit Traditional Knowledge) are all definite assets and will make him a good chair.”

In the past several years, Mr. Tigullaraq has held senior management positions with the Government of Nunavut in both the Department of Environment and former Department of Sustainable Development. He has prior experience working closely with regional wildlife organizations, particularly the Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board, various hunters and trappers organizations, as well as communities across Nunavut. Mr. Tigullaraq received his diploma from the Environmental Technology Program at the Arctic College in 1990 and has 10 years of hands-on experience working as a Renewable Resources Officer.

The Nunavut Wildlife Management Board is an Institution of Public Government established in 1993 by the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. The main responsibilities of the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board are wildlife management and the regulation of access to wildlife in the Nunavut Settlement Area. The Board’s mandate also includes participating in research, maintaining wildlife harvesting quotas, assisting in habitat management planning, as well as promoting the training and employment of Inuit in wildlife research.
