Government of Canada Supports Six Francophone Organizations in Northwest Territories

YELLOWKNIFE, August 1, 2005 -- Minister of State (Northern Development) and Member of Parliament (Western Arctic) Ethel Blondin-Andrew, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $337,250 in funding for six Francophone organizations based in the Northwest Territories. The funds will enable these organizations to continue to promote the interests of Francophone communities in the Northwest Territories.

"The dedication and vitality of these organizations ensure that the Francophone presence remains vibrant in the Northwest Territories," said Minister of State Blondin-Andrew. "I encourage members of these communities to continue to demonstrate their pride in their language and culture, since they are the driving force behind French language and culture in the North."

"The Government of Canada is committed to the development of official-language communities in minority situations across the country," said Minister Frulla. "I am proud to support the efforts of organizations serving communities and working to strengthen Francophone identity in the Canadian North."

The following organizations will receive funding:

L'Association franco-culturelle de Yellowknife $66,000
Les Éditions franco-ténoises/L'Aquilon $30,000
L'Association des francophones du Delta du Mackenzie $20,000
L'Association des francophones de Fort Smith $26,000
L'Association franco-culturelle de Hay River $26,000
La Fédération franco-ténoise $169,250

These six organizations provide quality French-language services, promote French-Canadian culture, and develop activities that support community development and foster a feeling of belonging among Francophones in the Northwest Territories.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Community Life component of its Development of its Official-Language Communities Program.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
