Government of Canada Matches Funds Raised During Theatre New Brunswick's Fundraising Campaign

FREDERICTON, August 3, 2005 -- Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Member of Parliament (Fredericton) Andy Scott, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $200,000 in funding for Theatre New Brunswick. These funds match the amount collected by the organization, and deposited into its foundation, during a private-sector fundraising campaign.

"Theatre New Brunswick contributes in many ways to cultural life in our part of the country," said Minister Scott. "The Theatre's success reflects on all of New Brunswick, and we can be proud of the support it receives from the private and public sectors."

"Through the partnerships it has established with organizations such as Theatre New Brunswick, the Government of Canada is helping our cultural institutions make our country a place where the arts are accessible to everyone," said Minister Frulla, "We provide them with concrete support by contributing an amount equal to the monies deposited in their foundations, which were collected during each organization's fundraising campaign among businesses, philanthropists and people who believe in the importance of arts and culture."

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Endowment Initiatives component of its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program, which provides matching funds for donations. It encourages private sector donors to contribute to the endowment funds of arts organizations so that these organizations have access to new and predictable sources of funding.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal Budget.
