Government of Canada Supports Réseau Scènes

Montréal, August 8, 2005 -- Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Social Development and Member of Parliament (Ahuntsic) Eleni Bakopanos, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $45,000 in funding for Réseau-Scènes. This support will enable the organization to expand its networking and professional development opportunities in 2005--2006.

"Réseau-Scènes plays an important role in the development and promotion of the arts in Quebec," said Ms. Bakopanos. "I am proud that our Government supports a network that enables audiences to attend high-quality performances."

"It is important that all citizens have the chance to discover the richness and diversity of our arts and culture," said Minister Frulla. "That is why our Government is joining efforts with organizations like Réseau-Scènes, who contribute to the influence of our artists and to the enrichment of cultural programming in our communities."

Thanks to this funding, Réseau-Scènes will put together a series of projects that will increase networking opportunities, like the creation of a weekly newsletter for its members. Created in 1987, Réseau Scènes is a group of 20 professional arts presenters that acts as an arts presentation manager and encourages the professional development of its members. This network contributes to marketing and developing interpretive arts.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided this funding through its Arts Presentation Canada Program. This Program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this initiative was forecast in the February 2005 federal Budget.
